Just the Facts

On the hill there is a rock.

The rock is 4 feet high
and 5 feet wide At it's widest point.

I estimate it weighs
3 to 4 tons.

It is made of oolitic limestone,
which is sediment and millions of tiny shells.

Compressed.

The rock stands by the path,
Cut out by an ancient quarryman.

I walk past it on the way up,
and I walk past it on the way down.

Sitting motionless by day or by night.
And that is the rock on the hill.

every day of the year that is. Except one.

When the light of the spring moon
falls upon its golden face,
for just one hour the rock becomes
the gatepost to another place.

A door to the wild land of faery
while the moon shines on the rock,
is open to any brave wanderer
who stands by the stone and knocks.

Stand by the stone and knock you see
when the solstice moon shines bright,
and you shall travel in faery
a year a day and a night.

When you return to our world again
and find yourself back on the hill,
there stands the rock by your side
waiting there quiet and still.
